Education and Training

The Director of Hicks Counselling Services, Margaret Hicks, is a marriage and family therapist and registered social worker.  Margaret has a Masters of Science degree in Couples and Family Therapy from the University of Guelph, American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (AAMFT) accredited program.  Margaret graduated summa cum laude from York University obtaining a Specialized Honours degree in Psychology.   Her post-graduate training includes:  Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) Certification, intensive sex therapy, mindfulness meditation, addiction assessment and counselling, children and adolescents’ mental health and trauma treatment.

Clinical Experience

Margaret has over fifteen years of clinical experience working in Toronto with individuals, couples, families, children and adolescents.  She is skilled in the use of systemic, narrative, solution-focused and evidence-based practices of therapy such as CBT and emotionally focused couples therapy.

In addition to her private practice, Margaret has worked for the Toronto District School Board, the Provincial Government, children’s mental health agencies, and Employee Assistance Programs (EAP).  Margaret has taught and provided clinical supervision for social work students.   She has been a member of the Special Needs Advisory Board, Ministry of Children and Youth Services Accreditation Committee and multi-disciplinary teams.  Margaret developed and implemented treatment groups for children and adolescents with learning disabilities and parents with special needs children. Her presentations and workshops for professional groups include:  Sexual Compulsive Behaviour, Workplace Harassment, Parenting, Secondary Trauma and Self-Care.

Margaret has a unique understanding of workplace issues.  Margaret acted as her EAP company’s newsletter clinical consultant and expert clinician on a live, phone-in national television program “On the Line” and has been quoted in the National Post.   She consults to supervisors, managers and human resource specialists on performance issues, harassment, suicidal employees and addictions.  Margaret has provided Critical Incident Debriefings to corporations and has experience in crisis intervention, trauma counselling and cross-cultural adaptation.  As a clinical provider for Manulife Financial’s rehabilitation healthcare team, Margaret provides mental health assessments and psychotherapy services.

Memberships and Associations

Margaret is a member in good standing with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (registration #777659), AAMFT and the Ontario Association of Marriage and Family Therapists.  She will hold membership with the soon to be established College of Psychotherapists and Registered Mental Health Therapists of Ontario. 

Margaret’s commitment to the wellbeing of children and families is demonstrated by her volunteer work with the Children’s Wish Foundation and the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.  She is also an active member of the Ontario High Conflict Families Committee.
